‘American Idol’ Recap: Amber Holcomb OWNS Motown-Themed Night

Wednesday’s episode of American Idol was all about The Motor City. The remaining eight contestants performed song selections by artists from Detroit.

Smokey Robinson was on deck this week as a guest mentor to the Top 8 and judges Nicki Minaj, Randy Jackson, Keith Urban and Mariah Carey were thoroughly impressed with a few of our favorite contestants.

Candice Glover opened the night with “Heard It Through The Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye. Her slowed down, bluesy version of the classic went off without a hitch. As usual, the judges were floored by her turn at the mic and she set the pace for a stellar show. It should go without saying that she’s safe this week.

The night’s standout performance comes from Amber Holcomb whose version of Stevie Wonder’s “Lately” brought all four judges to their feet. “When God made those vocal chords he was showing off,” quips Nicki. She’s right. The performance was flawless. It’s also the second time Miss Amber rocked a dress as hard as her vocal. Her all-white ensemble was quite the showstopper. The talented beauty has been feeling a bit beat up ever since she landed in the Bottom 3 unexpectedly. This performance is just what she needed to get her spark back.

Burnell Taylor also chose an all white ensemble and a Stevie song to go with it. His turn at “My Cherie Amour” is damn near perfect. The New Orleans native is so consistent; it’s hard to imagine he won’t make it to the show’s final weeks. “Yes sir! You reminded us why we fell in love with that voice tonight!” noted Nicki. “It’s very artsy to watch and hear you sing.” Although his all guys group number of The Four Tops’ “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honeybun)” fell flat, he won’t be the fall guy for that disaster.

Here’s hoping America makes the right choice and keep these three in for the long haul.
