After nearly 30 years in the business, there are few actors that truly dazzle Angela Bassett. But when Morgan Freeman came on set to shoot their new film Olympus Has Fallen, she was speechless.
“It was an intimidating kind of thing… but it didn’t last long. The moment I met him it was magnificent,” she tells CocoaFab. The two iconic actors star in the Washington DC terrorist thriller as the director of the Secret Service (Bassett) and the Secretary of State (Freeman). Together they helm the team to reclaim the White House from North Korean infiltrators and save the world from nuclear disaster.
Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) directs an all-star cast: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman and Angela Bassett.
It wasn’t hard for the actress to continue to rave about Freeman. “He’s everything I’ve hoped for; someone to play with, to challenge me, to study, to steal ideas from, and he’s a pretty good singer as well.”
Fuqua then let it slip that Freeman is quite the singer on set. “Yes he used to serenade us with Peggy Lee in between takes on set,” said Bassett. “You just don’t know,” added Fuqua.
As for meeting Bassett and working with her for the first time, Freeman was just as honored. “One of the great things about this work as an actor is that I’m still kind of starstruck. I see actors, and I’ve seen everyone here do incredible work, and to get a chance to dance with them is a serious perk in life. When I walked on set and saw Angela, it’s like ‘Yeah, I’m there!'”
While it seems so surprising that this is the duo’s first time working together, we couldn’t think of a better on-screen relationship to have. To see both of them, two dynamic black people, at the head of the table in the Situation Room is both inspiring and just downright cool.
Olympus Has Fallen opens March 22.
