From the moment we laid eyes on Grammy-nominated R&B singer/songwriter and Covergirl Janelle Monae, we knew she was something special. She’s brilliant, adorably stunning, her voice is like water for chocolate and she reminds us daily that it’s totally cool to be ourselves. For the longest time though, we couldn’t help but wonder why the We Are Young summer anthem singer exclusively donned monochromatic colors.
While accepting the Young, Black and Gifted award at this year’s Black Girls Rock! Ceremony, the timeless, sophisticated beauty put our questions to bed with a poignant and tear-jerking explanation of what we all thought were just mere style choices.
“When I first started my music career, I was a maid. I used to clean houses. My parents; my mother was a proud janitor. My stepfather who raised me like his very own, worked at the post office and my father was a trash man. They all wore uniforms. And that’s why I stand here today in my black and white and I wear my uniform to honor them,” she said before breaking down.
In that moment we, for the first time, saw more than just a pretty, black and white-wearing, intricate hairstyle-having, pocket-sized eclectic R&B star. She opened her heart up on that stage and we fell right in.
Janelle (who turned 27 this past Saturday, December 1st) is CocoaFab’s Beauty Of The Week. While we wait for someone to hit the button on the Happy Belated Birthday confetti, here are some of her best beauty looks and how to make them your own.
