The Black Girls Rock Awards brought out some of the most influential womenÂ on the planet.
First lady Michelle ObamaÂ was also on deck to deliver a powerful speech to the brilliant womenÂ and girls who lended an ear to hear FLOTUS.
“I am so proud of you. My husband, your president, is so proud of you. We have so much hope and dreams for you.”
The awards ceremony honor the celebrates the workÂ ofÂ inspirational African-American women who are trailblazers and airsÂ Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 7 pm/ET on BET.
On the red carpet, Jada Pinkett-Smith, her youthful mom and daughter Willow, ruled looking fashionable and flawless. Can we just say WOW to Miss Willow who was definitely serving! She is growing into a gorgeous young woman and towered over her mom and grandmother looking like a model.
Jada received the Star Power award, from her hubby Will Smith, who spoke with emotion on the rumors that their marriage was in trouble and how he had a chance to reflect on the importance of family in that moment.
“In that brief moment my heart jumped for a second and I started to imagine what my life would have been like without that woman.”
Jada accepted her honor and chose to raise the consciousness of black girls likeÂ Little League pitcher Mo’ne Davis and the constant attacks against their character. She also urged black women to celebrate their own strength and resilience.
“I need you to understand that we are the women who marched from cotton fields into fields of medicine … politics … entertainment,” she said. “We have found a way to march into the White House.”
CicelyÂ Tyson was honored with the Living Legend Award and accepted her award fromÂ hosts actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King.
“The moment anyone tries to demean or degrade you in any way, you have to know how great you are,” Tyson said. “Nobody would bother to beat you down if you were not a threat.”
Selma directorÂ Ava DuVernay earned theÂ Shot Caller Award and urged women to:Â “Figure out what you need to do to be the heroine of your own story.”
Other recipients included:Â Dr. Helene D. GayleÂ who received the Social Humanitarian Award, Erykah Badu,Â Rock Star Award, and Nadia Lopez received theÂ Change Agent Award.
Singers Janelle Monae, Jill Scott, Estelle and CiaraÂ got the groove flowing with their vocals and even old-school legends Sister Sledge, sang the classicÂ “We Are Family.”
