CASTING NEWS: Jennifer Hudson to Star in ‘The Color Purple’ on Broadway

Get ready to shake your shimmy because Jennifer Hudson just snagged the role of the sultry blues singer, Shug Avery in the Broadway play The Color Purple.

This will be the American Idol alum’s foray from the big screen to the big stage and the show will be produced by Scott Sanders, Roy Furman and Oprah Winfrey.

The award-winning actress could add a Tony to her long list of accolades that already includes a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a Grammy.

Word is that Cynthia Erivo, who played the role of Celie in the 2013 Broadway musical at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory will be playing the role of Celie in the Broadway production.

The on stage adaptation of Alice Walker’s critically acclaimed book will be directed and designed by John Doyle, a Tony award winner for his work in Sweeney Todd.

Congratulations Jennifer. Break a leg!
