Common SPEAKS On Lost Loves: Erykah Badu, Taraji P. Henson & Serena Williams

Common may be one of the most eligible bachelors in the entertainment industry but the rapper turned actor has had his share of heartache over the years.

He recently opened up about his past relationships with Erykah Badu, Taraji P. Henson and Serena Williams in an interview with The Breakfast Club.

According to Common, Serena and Erykah were his most serious relationships.

“It’s like once I’ve experienced that person its like man, sometimes life goes on,” he said.

“I can’t say I never would go back but Serena and Erkyah was the most serious relationships that I had as an adult and after, it’s one of those things, it’s like, ‘I have to move forward.’ It was real love right there. Both of those women I could’ve married. I was like if I’m not supposed to be there, we’re just supposed to be friends.”

Now, he’s unsure about whether or not he will ever walk down the aisle.

“I don’t know. I was thinking about that last night while talking to one of my lady friends. I don’t know if I’m marriage material, maybe someday” he said.

“I be focused on my music and my work a lot. Sometimes that’s hard to balance with a relationship. I do like relationships, but a lot of times when I’m in relationships, I don’t make my best albums. Put it this way, I would have to find the right relationship. You know, a woman who understands the time that you gotta give. to your work. That’s really what it is.”

The rapper also came clean about the root of his beef with Drake. It turns out he was salty over the fact that his tennis pro ex started dating Drizzy after she and Common called it quits.

“Me and Serena was together. We broke up. I don’t know specifically her and Drake, it felt like obviously something was going on [after we broke up], I ain’t dwell on it too much. I ain’t have no problem with that, you do what you do. After a while I felt like in some of Drake’s songs he was saying stuff that was subliminal to me. And I was like, you just don’t know nowadays cats be doing them sneak disses and after a while it was like I’m just going to come out and say what I need to say. It was a show I was at and I left and Drake said something out to the crowd, some tough stuff. So then I was like, ‘aight, it was that time’ because I knew he was directing it to me. We kept it on record and after that it was squashed,” he said.

“I definitely talked to her about it. At the end of the day, once she aint ya lady, what can I say? It don’t have nothing to do with me at that point.”

As for Taraji, Common says she was his mother’s favorite girl.

“My mother loved Taraji and funny enough she got cool with Serena even more after we broke up.”

What was the purpose of this?
Seems https://twitter.com/Common is working extra hard to throw shade at https://twitter.com/TherealTaraji P. Henson. Is he jealous of her success? This article makes him appear shallow… gives the impression that he’s a womanizer and that each woman was wise to move on. Taraji did receive her OSCAR, EMMY & SAG nominations via training from Howard University and hard work (without him)…all while raising a son on her own.
Perhaps Taraji forgot to invite him on her new show “Empire.” The show is about a hip hop dynasty and Common’s career could prob use the boost Taraji’s latest project would bring. I also find it interesting, (and in stark contrast), that during Ms.Henson’s press tour for From The Rough, news outlets instead chose to shift focus to her comments regarding her choice to date whomever she chooses (rather than the promotion of her film). Just more proof that sexism and suppression of Black Women begins at home and that it is still a sad part of our community.

1stOptimism Your  perceiving this interview wrong he simply states that Taraji was his mother favorite there is no “shade” being thrown. He clearly states he loved both Erykah and Serena and he could of married them. Everyone isn’t compatible so that could have been the case with him and Taraji where his feelings was not as strong for her as it was with the other two, Taraji is most certainly doing her thing at the peak of her career but you do realize they dated when she was not as popular. You would  also make a really good publicist for Taraji

1stOptimism True. That’s why so many successful women are leery of dating rappers at all. It’s like too many of them have a missing chip where truly respecting women is concerned. Why would Common “subtly” try to besmirch the reputation of a woman he allegedly really loved? Why crazily pretend he thought Serena was “dating” Drake before she allegedly “broke up” with him?!  That very public “speculation” was ungentlemanly and uncalled for. Common knows full well that if he had seriously asked Serena to marry him, they’d be married today!

I find it hard to believe. Serena stated after their break-up that she tried everything she knew how to do to make the relationship work – especially after Common spoke on national television about how she’d make a great wife and that he wanted to marry. Serena publicly talked about how hurt she was and how she lost confidence in herself in the romance department. IF she “initiated” a “breakup” at all it sounds like it may have been just a ruse to get him to finally commit. If he had seriously asked Serena to marry him and they’d set a date, she’d be married to Common today.

And I think his relationship with Taraji P. He son was more serious than he alleges. I think he was just embarrassed when she publicly spoke ( on a radio show) and said because Common broke up with her, she was so hurt and her young son -who’d grown so fond of Common- was so saddened by their breakup – that she decided to Stop Dating Altogether. Common is over 40 years-old. If he can’t commit, he should just leave women alone – rather than keep hurting them and then trying to make THEM look “bad” afterwards. Serena wasn’t “dating” Drake before she and Common broke up – and no real gentleman would suggest such a thing!
