Cuba Gooding Jr. and Jurnee Smollett-Bell latest to star in slave projects

After the critical acclaim that followed 12 Years a Slave, Hollywood has greenlit a number of new slavery themed movies and tv shows.

Are there any movies about the Kings and Queens of Egypt on the horizon? Lupita Nyong’o would play a lovely Nefertari with Idris Elba as Ramesses.

The latest project is from Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sharon Leal (Addicted). The pair stars in the film Freedom where Samuel (Gooding) his wife and children escape from their plantation and hazardously travel the Underground Railroad in efforts to flee to Canada. The film, directed by Peter Cousens and written by Timonthy Chey will be released June 5.

Next year, A&E and Lifetime will premiere their remake of the 1977 mini-series, Roots. Will Packer (The Wedding Ringer, Ride Along) will executive produce the project along with original cast member LeVar Burton.

WGN has ordered a ten-episode slave drama entitled Underground which will star Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Parenthood) and Christopher Meloni (Law & Order SVU).

Also, legendary singer/songwriter Stevie Wonder is partnering with NBC to produce an underground railroad miniseries and musical entitled, Freedom Run based on the Betty DeRamus’ book Forbidden Fruit: Love Stories From the Underground Railroad.
