SEX SCANDAL UPDATE: Third Accuser Steps Forward

KevinClash and Elmo

UPDATE 11/27/12: Deadline.com is reporting that a third accuser has stepped forward with a law suit against Kevin Clash, the award-winning voice behind the PBS series’ character Elmo who resigned last week amid allegations of having underage sex with boys. Per Deadline, the latest suit, filed today in Manhattan, is from an unidentified Florida man who claims that he and Clash connected on a gay telephone chat line when the man was 16 in 2000, and the two had sexual encounters at Clash’s New York apartment.

LATEST UPDATE: The NY Post is reporting that two more unnamed accusers have reached out to authorities, according to sources familiar with their allegations.

USA Today reports that Kevin Clash has resigned his position from Sesame Street. A second accuser has also stepped forward and filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit. The company released the following statement:

“Sesame Workshop’s mission is to harness the educational power of media to help all children the world over reach their highest potential,” the company said. “Kevin Clash has helped us achieve that mission for 28 years, and none of us, especially Kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving as a leading educational organization. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street. This is a sad day for Sesame Street.”

That story that broke last week that would no longer allow any of us to look at Elmo the same way again just gets weirder by the day. Last week we were all astonished to hear the allegations that Kevin Clash, the creator of the adorable Elmo voice, was being accused by Sheldon Stephens, a man now in his early twenties, of having a sexual relationship with the young man when he was 16 and Clash was 45. The good folks at The Sesame Street Workshop quickly released a statement saying Kevin was taking a leave from the show and we wondered if Elmo was done for good. Then we breathed a sigh of relief when news broke that the young man in question had recanted his statement….

But now there’s a new little furry red twist. According to TMZ, Sheldon Stephens is now saying that he was “pressured” into signing the settlement which required that he release a statement saying his sexual relationship with Kevin Clash, the beloved voice behind Elmo, “was an adult consensual relationship.”

We have a feeling we haven’t heard the end of this twisted tale…
