During Sunday night’s Golden Globes, new it-girl Lupita Nyong’o wasn‘t the only actress keeping Twitter abuzz. Past award nominee and Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe was the victim of some harsh weight criticism and fat shaming.
The star wore a body-conscious Michael Costello-designed gown, altered by Daniel Musto causing social media erupted with nasty tweets, which she seemed to handle with grace. In response, the 30-year-old tweeted:
“To people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on my way to my dream job last night. #JK”
She later followed it up with:
Everyone is so wonderful and supportive of my shade! This might be a problem down the line. Thank you! #notmyjetthough #imnotthatfancy
In other words, the best way to deal with the haters is to brush it off and keep living her dreams. The actress has not struggled to find roles after Precious despite what many critics said about her weight being a huge obstacle to her professional success. But establishing confidence and self-esteem hasn’t been easy. It’s been hard work and a long journey. In 2012, she admitted, “At some point when I was 21 or 22 I just decided that life wasn’t worth living if I wasn’t happy with myself so I just took all the steps that I could to figure out how to love myself and become confident. Truthfully speaking if I hadn’t found this person before that movie [Precious] I wouldn’t have even been in that movie.”
Good for Gabby!
