Look out! Beyonce isn’t the only Carter making big moves this spring.
Having already built one of the biggest and most respected brands in the music world, Jay-Z is launching Roc Nation Sports and will co-partner with CAA to represent athletes.
Roc Nation Sports is a full-service management consulting, media and entertainment company and record label. Its new sports division has already signed its first client: New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano.
The division will be headed by Hov and Juan Perez, who will serve as president.
“Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” said Jay. This move was clearly calculated and planned over the course of several years and his stake in both the Brooklyn arena and in the Nets were just first steps towards him taking over the sports world.
Given the resources both companies, Roc Nation and CAA, can provide a client, Jay-Z has made his company a hard one to turn down and an even harder one to compete with. Robinson Cano tweeted a photo of himself and Jay-Z, below, signing their new contract Tuesday.
Sources say Jay himself is planning to be a certified agent, first in baseball and eventually in basketball and football. However, in order to represent clients in basketball, he would have to give up his share of the Brooklyn Nets. So there will be many more moves for the highest paid hip-hop star to make in the coming months and years.
