Racism is still alive and thriving, and those with racist opinions aren’t just in the backwoods of Southern states or occupying the stereotypical sectors of society. They are everywhere. On social media, on the web, and, yes, reading (and commenting on) TMZ.
The uber popular celebrity news site posted video footage of Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy out on a date last night with NBA baller Andre Drummond. The site captured the interracial couple holding hands on a romantic date in Los Angeles.
But that’s just the beginning of the story. In response to the blog, posted earlier this morning, TMZ received dozens of racist and overly sexual comments about the couple.
Here is just a small sample of the comments, some of which had to be removed from TMZ because of the graphic and violent nature.
These are just disgusting! And, sadly, so telling about where we as a nation still stand when it comes to race, marriage, and discrimination. What’s even more sad is that it seems like TMZ also played into the stereotypes about black men and white women. At the end of the post, the writer included an odd hashtag “#realpimp” which can conjure up notions of African-American pimps luring innocent white girls into a life of crime and prostitution. Not cool TMZ.
