All the single ladies, listen up: don’t go to your single girlfriends for advice on love. They’re just as confused as you are about how to navigate romance.
Instead, go to someone like … Niecy Nash. She doesn’t have all the answers, but she has some, and the happily married actress and comedienne recently added author to her title, with the release of “It’s Hard To Fight Naked,” which hit bookstores last month!
The second season oh her hit TV Land show, “The Soul Man,” returns later this month. She chats with us about how to get as happy as she is.
Tell us why you wanted to kind of help single ladies out. What made you want to write this book?
Well, I feel like love is the thing we were created for, yet it’s the place we struggle the most. And I feel like if any of my experience, my stories, my failures, my successes could help the next woman in her journey, I feel like I owe that to women, you know, and men too, because I wanted the people that I love to have rich, full relationships and as I started helping them I decided to cast a wider net.
So if I read this book should something magically happen to my love life?
My intent is for you to get the relationship you deserve!
So … give us some advice. What should single women be doing?
Well, there are multiple nuggets or items that you’d call takeaways in the book. It just depends on where you are in the love journey what is going to resonate with you. If you’re right at the beginning I would tell you to be what you want to see, because inevitably you are going to attract what you are. And so if a whole bunch of crazy people keep showing up then get up and look in the mirror and say, ‘Good morning, crazy!’ Because something ain’t right. And then if you’re a little further down the road and you’re prepared to go out and date, I would encourage you to date for your priority, not for your preference. And then if you’re a little further down the road I would probably tell you some things that you can do to keep your man out of the streets and in your sheets!
Congratulations on coming back from season two of ‘Soul Man.’ What new kind of energy do you think is going to happen in this second season?
I have to be very honest with you and it is not because I am in this series, but this second season is a-mazing! I think that we found a very wonderful cruising altitude. The stories are fresher, it’s funnier, it’s rooted in a different type of energy. You’re going to get a little more Cedric The Entertainer. It’s real life application that’s going on and you see a lot more Voice and Lolli working through the ups and downs of life together. We have some great guest stars this season. So far we’ve had Kim Wayans, we’ve had Jamie Kennedy come aboard. We are having such a good time, to the point where when we’ve been in scenes in rehearsal people standing around are applauding!
You guys are both comedians are you both going off script a lot?
Not really because we have writers that get paid to write it and they want to hear their words! So we respect that. It’s not an unscripted show. But there are places where we can play and color some things, but it’s not a…it’s a place we stop by and visit but not a place we live!
The Soul Man returns to TV Land on June 19 at 11 p.m.
