In an interview with The Grio‘s Chris Witherspoon, she addresses the case head-on.
“Trayvon Martin, parallel to Emmett Till,” Oprah says in the clip which aired on the TODAY show. “Let me just tell you, in my mind, same thing. But you can stuck in that and not allow yourself to move forward and to see how far we’ve come.”
Oprah, who co-stars in The Butler with Forest Whitaker, said in a previous interview with Diane Sawyer that perhaps her new film would help white people who were confused about the outrage in the aftermath of the acquittal verdict understand why black people were so upset.
“There were so many people on the other side of that question who didn’t understand why so many black people were upset. I think this movie offers an answer. We’re still trying to live up to what the ideals of this country is,” she says in that interview.
