Six years into his presidency, Barack Obama has just become even cooler by joining twitter! Everyone go follow @POTUS! According to USA Today, he’s since broken the Guinness World Records, becoming the fastest user to reach one million followers in under five hours.
He even joked with former President Bill Clinton (@BillClinton) who said “Welcome to @Twitter, @POTUS! One question: Does that username stay with the office? #askingforafriend“ to which Obama replied, “Good question, @billclinton. The handle comes with the house. Know anyone interested in @FLOTUS?“Â
What should be a lighthearted situation has recently been filled with contention. Sadly, the President’s twitter account has been marred with racial slurs. The hate speech has also carried over to Google Maps where typing in the “N†word in the search bar resulted in the user being directed to The White House.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Google Maps utilizes a “crowd-editing system†where users can edit details about maps and searches. Google has since disabled the feature until it can develop a more iron clad system. The company has also issued an apology in saying, “Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologize for any offense this may have caused. Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly.”
