On the heels of releasing her new candid song, “Dirty Laundry,” Kelly Rowland recently sat down with 93.9 WKYS radio in Washington, DC for a brief interview to dish about her new album, why she broke down in tears on stage during a recent performance, Beyonce’s response to “Dirty Laundry,” and more. In case you missed it, the track is about how Kelly felt jealous while Beyonce‘s solo career soared to new heights.
Here are the highlights:
On what made her open up on ‘Dirty Laundry’ and the perception that she was jealous of Beyonce back then:
“ It was a form of therapy and I feel like everybody has their version of ‘Dirty Laundry.’ And it’s nothing to be ashamed of because you’re supposed to grown and learn from it like I did. It was the place that I was in…I was so young. My head was completely gone. That’s what happened with my sister. What matters to me most is what we have. I’m so grateful for what we have as sisters…away from Destiny’s Child.”
On crying during “Dirty Laundry” performance in D.C.:
“ It’s really weird when you take yourself in front of a crowd. Even in that moment of when I put my feet up, I felt like I was in therapy. I was singing and talking about what happened, and for a moment, it was like that crowd wasn’t even there. And then when the music stopped…I was like “You are live Kel. Calm down.” And I had to calm down, and in the moment, I had to breate. You get lost…and it’s nothing wrong with getting lost. But that was weird. That won’t happen again though [laughs]. I felt like I could do that with D.C.”
On Beyonce’s reaction to the song:
“Of course! I played it (“Dirty Laundry”) for her and Michelle. She was just like “I never left.” Which was so sweet. It was endearing. She heard how real I was and she was just like “I’m so proud of you.”
On the rumors that the 2006 Destiny’s Child song ‘Girl’ was about her challenges:
“The funny thing is, I cannot believe how freakin’ spot on everybody was with that! Because between ‘Bad Habit’ and ‘Girl’….that WAS that time in my life. Y’all are just a little crazy [laughs]. They [the fans] ‘be knowin!”
